Don't Look Away: Kramers and The Inner Loop welcome writers Stephanie Dupal and Shelagh Powers Johnson to discuss stories that explore the dark side of humanity and find a glimmer of hope. Our moderator for the night is Rion Amilcar Scott. Through lyrical prose and piercing insights, Stephanie Dupal and Shelagh Powers Johnson explore a dynamic set of characters across vast time periods and varied settings in their respective short story collections. Both are unafraid to confront the darker side of humanity—brutality and heartbreak, betrayal and wrenching loss—but find a commonality in those experiences, and dare we say it: redemption. Stephanie Dupal is a Franco-Canadian and American professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College. She and her husband live in the D.C. metro area. Her stories appear in various magazines here and abroad. The Kindness of Terrible People is her first collection. Shelagh Powers Johnson is a fiction writer, a professor of Literature and Creative Writing, and the faculty editor of Bowie State University's literary magazine, The Torch. She holds an MFA in Fiction from American University and has over twenty years of experience writing and editing various media. Her writing has been nominated for a Pushcart, Best Microfiction, and Best Small Fictions, and she is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence and the English Impact Award for her work as a professor. Rion Amilcar Scott is the author of the story collections The World Doesn’t Require You and Insurrections , which was awarded the 2017 PEN/Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction and the 2017 Hillsdale Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers. He teaches creative writing at the University of Maryland, College Park. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Kenyon Review, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2020 and McSweeney's Quarterly , among other publications.
